Social Science

The social science major allows students to do concentrated work in the allied disciplines of history, political science, economics, sociology, and psychology. The design of the program is to prepare students for graduate education in the social sciences, law school or for a Master of Arts in Teaching in the area of social studies with several options for minors. Minors in Economics, History, International Studies, Pre-Law, Psychology or Sociology, among others are available to interested students. The major also gives students a strong liberal arts education and fosters skills that will prove valuable in other areas of advanced study and/or in the work force. Students may take additional coursework to prepare for graduate study in law, sociology, history, social studies teaching, or public administration. Students interested in law or teaching need to work closely with the Program Director for choosing the proper electives, minor or for preparation for advanced study.

Social Science majors can find career opportunities in many fields. Because of the liberal arts foundation, graduates will find many employers eager to hire those with a broad based education, excellent communication skills, the ability to think analytically and those with a strong work ethic. Students can shape their career direction by obtaining internships in their areas of interest and by working or volunteering in related activities.
